- AMALFI
Originally Roman, it was
incessantly plunder and
abandoned, for this reason it
proclaim itself independent
maritime republic.
It built ships, whith three
floors and more than 116 oar, it
use to make business with
eastern civility, importing
spices and cloth and importing
its products like paper built
whit first with papirus than
with canapa imported by China.
Along the coast, we found a lots
of watching towers, against
saracens and normans attacks.
This marvelous period of Amalfi
is testified by the arsenal that
you can find in the main square.
Flavio Gioia, iventor of the
compass, was born in Amalfi.
The Amalfitan have built a lots
of monastery and hospital, also
in Gerusalemme, in 1020, Fra
Gerardo Sasso, from Scala, found
the hospital that will become
seat of the "San Giovanni dei
poveri" cavalry.
Patron of Amalfi, Saint Andre,
is celebrate two times a year.
In Summer, the local fisherman,
cover the statue that is located
in the dome, and they run to the
beach with it, all this to ask
miracle to the Saint. |
